It is time to go green! My commitment to a sustainable future.

I have been in business as an artist for over six years and thought I was doing quite well with sustainability. However, I have realized that there is so much more I could be doing, so I have decided to make some changes and share my commitment to a sustainable future.

BUT WHY NOW?

I saw a post on social media about April being Earth Month and wanted to know more about it. And, you guessed it, I was sent down a rabbit hole about sustainable living, being eco-friendly, and going green. I was hooked and soon realized I was not as Eco-friendly as I would like to think.

That realization gave me the push towards a more sustainable business practice and lifestyle, and it is in this blog that I declare my commitment to help save the planet.

SO, WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

A sustainable business and lifestyle offers many benefits, impacting the environment, your wallet, and overall well-being. Focusing on practices that minimize waste and environmental impact, can help businesses to save more. Reducing energy consumption by switching to energy-efficient light bulbs lowers operational expenses. Additionally, a commitment to sustainability often resonates with environmentally conscious consumers, leading to increased brand loyalty and a competitive advantage.

Beyond the financial perks, adopting a sustainable lifestyle fosters a sense of personal responsibility and connection to the planet. Simple changes like carrying a reusable water bottle or opting for local, seasonal produce can help to reduce your footprint. These choices not only lessen your reliance on environmentally taxing resources but can also lead to healthier eating habits and a more mindful way of living.

Ultimately a sustainable approach benefits the future for everyone. Businesses that prioritize responsible practices contribute to a healthier planet for future generations. Likewise, individuals who embrace sustainability create a positive ripple effect, inspiring others to follow suit and collectively work towards a more sustainable future.

MY SUSTAINABLE JOURNEY:

While I was researching sustainable living, I wrote a list of all the ways I can incorporate it into my work.

This is the list so far and how I will do it.

1 Energy efficiency:

  • Power down electronics when not in use.

  • Make use of natural light as much as possible.

  • Switch to energy-efficient light bulbs.

  • Turn the thermostat down.

  • Don’t overfill the kettle.

2 Sustainable art supplies and packaging:

  • Recycled materials for paper, sketchbooks, pencils, etc.

  • Natural alternatives to mediums and solvents.

  • Use only the necessary amount of packaging.

  • Use packaging peanuts or crinkled paper only if needed.

3 Digital:

  • Create more printable art.

  • Reduce physical printing.

4 Second hand:

  • Buy second-hand/preloved office furniture.

  • Buy second-hand/preloved workwear.

The four categories above are just the start. I will introduce more ways to become sustainable as time goes by and I read up on it more.

Making small steps towards sustainability is a better approach for me instead of cramming it all in overnight. This way I won’t feel overwhelmed by the process. I am excited to begin my sustainable journey and would encourage anyone to make these changes too. It is our planet that is at stake and future generations living on it. Let’s protect it from future damage.

“We don’t have to engage in grand, heroic actions to participate in change.

Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.”
