Buying art for the bedroom

A painting hanging on a bedroom wall

Bedrooms are our private sanctuaries, spaces where we retreat to from the hustle and chaos of our daily lives. They are where we seek rest, rejuvenation, and a sense of tranquillity. The overall ambience and aesthetics of our bedrooms play a significant role in our ability to achieve these goals. While furniture, lighting and other décor elements contribute to the overall feel of a bedroom, it is art that holds the power to truly transform the space.

Art can play an important role in creating a personal and relaxing atmosphere in your bedroom. The right art can set the mood, reflect your personality, and make your bedroom feel more like a haven.

How art can enhance your bedroom

1/ It can personalise your space by helping to express your unique style and interests. By choosing pieces that resonate with you, you can create a bedroom that truly feels your own.

2/ It can set the mood: The right artwork can evoke different emotions, from calming and relaxing to energising and inspiring. Choose pieces that create the mood that you want in your bedroom.

3/ Reflect your interests: Whether you love nature, travel or abstract art, there's artwork out there to reflect your passions. Choosing pieces that represent your interests can add a personal touch to your bedroom.

4/ Create a focal point: A large piece of artwork can draw the eye and create a focal point in your bedroom. This can help to anchor the space and make it feel more inviting.

5/ Add colour and pattern: Art can add a splash of colour and pattern to your bedroom walls. This can help to break up the monotony and make your bedroom feel more interesting.

Understanding your bedroom aesthetic

1/ Define your overall bedroom décor style

Take a look at your bedroom and get a sense of how you want your bedroom to look and feel like. This will make it easier when looking for the art later on.

Here a few ideas to consider:

  • Modern, minimalist

  • Traditional, elegant

  • Vintage vibes

  • Eclectic, bohemian

  • Rustic, natural

  • Scandinavian, Hygge

  • Cottage, countryside

2/ Consider the existing colour scheme and furnishings in your bedroom.

Are you working around what you already have or are you starting from scratch?

3 Identify the emotional atmosphere you want to create in your bedroom.

What kind of feeling do you want to evoke?

  • Calm and soothing

  • Energetic and vibrant

  • Serene and meditative

  • Romantic and intimate

  • Playful and whimsical

Knowing this will help you in your colour and style choices.

Where to look

1/ Local art galleries are a great place to find high quality original art. You can often find a variety of styles and price points at galleries and you'll also have the opportunity to talk to the artists and learn more about their work.

2/ Department stores are at the other end of the spectrum and you can find affordable art in these places. Bear in mind that they are mass produced and many other people may have the same as you. If this is not a problem then go and have a look.

3/ Online art platforms are a great way to find art for the bedroom. You can buy artwork from both established and emerging artists. Some popular platforms include: Artsy, Saatchi art, Etsy and Ebay.

4/ Local markets and flea markets are places you can sometimes find great deals on artwork. Keep an eye out for local artists who are selling their work and be sure to ask about the history of the pieces you are interested in.

5/ Charity shops and antique shops sometimes have some beautiful art pieces on display. A good tip though that I use all the time is that if you love the frame that the art is in but the art itself if not any good then buy it anyway. You can take the old art out and replace it with the new to suit your taste.

6/ Colleges and universities often have galleries that are open to the public. These galleries often feature the work of students and faculty, and you can sometimes find unique and affordable prices.

7/ Your own creations would also look great in the bedroom if you are a creative person. This is a great way to add a personal touch to your space, and you can create pieces that match your style and aesthetic.

Incorporating the art into your bedroom

  • Determine the appropriate scale and size of artwork for your bedroom walls.

  • Experiment with different layouts and arrangements to find the perfect balance.

  • Consider framing and matting options to enhance the presentation of your chosen artworks.

  • Utilise lighting fixtures or natural light to accentuate the art and create a focal point.

3/ Floral and botanical prints to add a touch of nature to the room.
